Thi system is packing quite a punch with some periods of moderate and heavy rain expected and snow down to 4500 feet in the mountains. Winds will also be gusty as the storm arrives especially in the mountains and deserts. Amounts with this system would be pretty high if it wasn’t moving so quickly. Currently about .35-.75 inches of rain is expected across the area west of the mountains through Saturday afternoon. Locally higher amounts may occur where thunderstorms form as there is a chance across the area, especially behind this front as the core of the low pressure area passes overhead. Snowfall amounts will probably be a bit more significant with 4-8″+ across the area above the 5000 foot level with highest amounts expected at Mt Baldy and Snow Valley due to some good southerly winds with this system creating some orographic lifting. Saturday will clear out slowly but a few showers and even a pop up thunderstorms cant be ruled out through the early afternoon hours. Sunday should overall be nice with some clouds overhead and slight warming. All eyes turn to a series of storms expected next week with the first sometime between early Monday and Tuesday which could have some more heavy rain and mountain snow with it Larger storms are expected late next week but timing is unknown at this point. Overall several inches of rain and several feet of snow may be possible by the time we reach next weekend as our above normal El Nino rain season continues.
Snowforecast
A compact low pressure system approaches the area, with cooler air filtering in, and southwest winds developing. Skies look partly cloudy, increasing to mostly cloudy toward resort closing (day shift). Moderate to heavy snow showers develop in a band of rain/ snow moving through mainly in the evening and overnight. Snow levels go from 6,000 to 5,000 feet during this time.
NWS
Partly to mostly cloudy with patchy dense fog through early evening. Then rain and snow developing. Snow accumulation of 2 to 5 inches. Snow level above 7000 feet decreasing to 6000 feet after midnight. Visibility a quarter mile or less at times.
This is the first and weakest of our upcoming parade of storms, look for more info later on!

It’s straight dumping here in Wrightwood and all around the region, I have 1ft on my deck (6100′) with much more higher up. We took some laps at the mountain last night and it was GREAT. This week should be amazing. More to come.

Well, the weather is here and it brought with it high snow levels initially. Forecasts are calling for rain initially tonight then all snow! I think I can deal with a little rain can’t you?
